Chapter 20

The fashion montages from movies usually left out how frustrating it is to find the right color scheme. Usually the protagonist wears a few outfits, some of them wacky, until the perfect one is magically found. In reality, I spent a painstaking eight hours at Clara’s to find the right costume. Every time I thought I was getting close, she’d say ‘no,’ ‘I don’t like it’ or ‘I think that color scheme is taken.’

It was fun for the first twenty minutes or so. But I’m frankly the kind of guy who doesn’t even try on shirts at the store before buying them. If I like the color and it’s my size, I buy it. Not Clara. But, she wasn’t looking at my costume with my own personal tastes in mind. She was considering things like natural camouflage, how certain segments drew the eye to them, making it easier for the enemy to target me; stuff like that. It was exhausting but eventually we found the right color combination and clothing set.

Navy blue was the chosen color. Dark enough to blend in with the night and the shadows, so I could effectively skulk around when I needed to. The suit was fortified Synlon, designed to withstand any blows I might take and deal out. The first few iterations of gloves I had worn were too thin to handle my immense strength, but once she upgraded to the strongest padding she could find, the problem had been solved.

There was a host of benefits behind Synlon. First off, it felt very comfortable to wear, almost like a second skin. Breathable and lightweight, cool and sweat absorbent. Flexible as well, able to move with me as I ran across her little obstacle course in the back of the building (which really just looked like a playground. When I asked her about how she got it, Clara quickly changed the subject without answering.)

Second, the Synlon was exceptionally resistant to all forms of damage. And on the rare occasion that something did break through, the clothing would regenerate itself over time, similar to how my accelerated healing functioned. How exactly this worked, I could not figure out for the life of me. But it certainly would make my life as a hero a lot easier. Not having to worry about repairing my clothing every night was a load off my mind. No wonder the heroes never looked tattered or worn when on TV.

For the mask, we settled on a full head covering that connected to the suit on the torso, leaving only my mouth unconcealed. “Your eyes aren’t a great feature,” she had said, poking at my face with a little shoehorn. “You look too bewildered all the time. We should hide them. Makes you more intimidating and won’t show your fear in times of crisis.”

This wasn’t a bad idea, actually. The eye coverings were layered, to filter out smoke or other types of chemical attacks, preventing anything from touching my eyes. Plus they looked cool too.
